What are your thoughts on Tarot cards?

I've had a reading and I have come up with this hypothesis that I call the horoscope effect:


When people get a tarot card reading, the "reader" tells them about the past, present and future. When they reader is talking about your past, they say things that can be applied to ANYONE. Same goes for the present. As for the future, as time passes after the reading, people who remember their reading with over generalize. In that ANY situation that sounds something like that the reader told them, is said to be a "premonition coming true." Same with your horoscope. Almost everyone who reads their horoscop will incorporate it into what has already happend to will subconsciously seek out events that the horoscope said will happen.


What do you think about this hypothesis?

Example: A woman might be told that she will marry a blonde. So, after this reading, she will pay no attention to brunettes and actively seeks out blonde. So of COUSE she is going to end up meeting and marrying one.

Eh. The example doesn't work, because the horoscopes and tarot cards are never that specific. They things like, "Usually you thrive in your own company, but the stars send you some delightfully flirtatious, outgoing energy. The more people you're around, the better. Find a place that's crowded -- really show off your charms." or, "Usually you thrive in your own company, but the stars send you some delightfully flirtatious, outgoing energy. The more people you're around, the better. Find a place that's crowded -- really show off your charms." Those apply to everyone. Have you heard of the experiment where a room full of college students are handed out papers with a horoscope on them, and asked if it seems true. They all say "yes", and then it is revealed that the horoscopes handed out are all identical. You're right in the beginning though. They things and you find things that are compatible. The things are never specific enough to be untrue. When is the last time you saw a horoscope that said, "On October 8th, 2011, you will be approached by a man in green sunglasses who announces himself as 'The Doctor'. He will give you a small furry rodent and walk away. A week later you will die of rabies."

I used to work for a phone company. I would get calls from customers who had huge phone bills from call the pychic network and talking to fortune tellers. They couldn't afford the bills but called anyway. Once I asked on of them, didnt this fortune teller see a HUGE phone bill in your future?????? They never advised them about the bill they were going to get.
Reply:I don't think Tarot cards can go down to such details. What they represent can be quite a broad area of premonitions, a person needs to be able to read the cards plus describe to a wide extent what the card is showing, so that the listener can at least understand which areas in their lifes will experience change in the future.


Most likely the Tarot in this case will say that the woman will experience change in her relationship or will encounter a soulmate, but the card won't say he is blonde although the picture on the card may show that this man is.


If the woman follows, there is still possibility that she won't end up marrying a blonde. I think we should consider the element of surprise (bad surprise = failure)no matter how hard we try.
Reply:I have had a couple of readings done and one was **** the other was unbelievably accurate. The guy didnt only use Tarot cards though, but he told me things that only myself and my partner know of and yeh, i was really taken aback.


With your example, half the time people walk out of readings and might think about it for a few weeks then they soon forget, suddenly when something happens and jogs their memory then they realise maybe what was said is truth, however, this does not apply to everyone and your example I am sure is true in many cases.

Reply:I used to read peoples' Tarot for them. Everyone whom I read for said that I was totally accurate and knew things about them that I could never have possibly known. Well, all I was really doing was using psychology on them. Tarot reading works the same way as psychics and other such charlatanry. You just throw some generalizations at them first, then read their body language and vocal intonations to make more accurate and precise statements. Since most of the people that ask for a reading either already believe or want to believe that it works, it makes the reader's job much easier.


People have a natural tendency to only remember the statements that elicit an emotional response - which are the ones (in their mind at least) that apply to them. This effect is caused by the release of certain endorphins which strengthen the neuronal connections in the brain.


Even the readers who actually believe in their own power are actually using these methods subconsciosly. Even people who are "empathic" are actually just more observant (whether consciously or subconsciously) of other peoples' body language and vocal intonations.


As far as predicting the future, people incorporate the predictions into what becomes a "self-fulfilling prophecy". This is the term used explain the example you used.

Reply:Tarot cards, I ching, crystals. All these things are just an object to focus concentration. The real point is in the interpretation of things, dreams, cards, it's all the power of the reader.





The hard thing is for people to use their intuition, we've been told always to ignore such "nonsense". Under the nonsense is the subconcious, and that is the source of intuition. We conciously use very little of our minds, and yet, below the surface, all that compuing power is going untapped.





All the focus objects just allow the reader to tap into that vast, untouched resource. It allows that small still voice, to speak.





However, everything is still in the hands of the reader. A good reader will give a good, accurate reading, a poor reader will give you a poor reading, and a con artist will give you a load of BS. (then ask for money)
Reply:Most so-called professional Tarot -readers are frauds and do say things that can be applied to anyone .But I read the cards and I can tell you they DO work,for instance I did a reading for a couple,they were friends of mine and I read them as a couple,for the "future"card I drew the ten of cups, a week later the woman in the couple was pregnant. The ten of cups means "family".ANd to the bible-thumpers I would like to say also,that the Tarot deck is the pre-cursor of the modern playing card deck.Do you have a paranoid aversion to them too?
Reply:Tarot is BS, just like all other psychics, etc.
Reply:Well, a tarot reader could not say such a thing as you are saying in your example unless they are fake. The tarot cannot go as "specific" as hair color. Horoscope has been prostituted in this day and time to be "open ended" and general. Tarot and Horoscope/Astrology are serious things and should be respected as long as the practitioner is a serious person.
Reply:Your hypotheses may be correct. This is why: most people who have their tarot cards read, go to charlatans who are just in it for the money. The people know what they want to hear and tell them. Same thing with a generalized horoscope. Here's the problem with your hypothesis: anyone who can really read tarot cards, will not tell you what you want to hear, but what the cards are saying. They are less likely to tell you something that can 'sound like a premonition coming true". If you have a natal chart done on your horoscope, the same thing applies: it is not likely to be a mass produced and over-generalized horoscope. Rather it is specific to you and you alone. Therefore, you do not have the likelihood of incorporating/generalizing/subconsciousl... seeking out events that it said will happen (provided you have an honest astrologist).
Reply:Try this. Do you're own reading. Look at each card and ponder what it means to you. There are many good books at the library which can help with the layout, etc.





It's important to develop a rapport with the cards. See the feeling that you get when you hold each one.





You might even get the meanings days later, or in a dream.





Enjoy it. The cards are beautiful. Don't overwork it. The meaning will come to you, do not to deliberately seek it.
